William Quigley: Two Stills and a Sheriff’s Sale
Two stills, court records, and a Cumberland County farm sold at auction.
About this film
Follow William Quigley’s life and estate through Cumberland County’s tax books, assault complaints and court records, 1789–1819. Original documents and slow-moving maps reveal a farmer with two assessed stills, the people he enslaved, a case naming seven Millers, and the legal machinery that eventually sold his farm. A music-driven learning film that translates courtroom language into plain English.
Behind the film
The history & the evidence.
William’s story rests on original tax photographs, sworn examinations, criminal-case papers and civil execution records. The film explains what each document did, keeps the assault prosecution separate from the collection proceedings, and distinguishes his East Pennsborough farm from Andrew’s later North Middleton purchase. Family and newspaper findings from earlier research are labeled as such.
